Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Summary
For our work in Katsina, Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for two qualified WASH Officers - National Position.
The WASH Officer will oversee all water and sanitation activities within the Malteser International program in Katsina State, Nigeria.
In fulfilling these duties, the WASH Officer must ensure full compliance with Malteser International’s and the donor’s administrative, human resources, finance, safety and security, and logistics procedures at the workplace.
Responsibilities
Coordinate Field Activities: Ensure timely and effective implementation of project activities, including daily coordination, planning, procurement, financial requests, and supervision of contractors in field locations
Planning & Logistics: Prepare monthly activity and staff movement plans, coordinate with contractors and teams, facilitate transport and logistics between field and Maiduguri office
Finance & Procurement: Develop advance and procurement requests, submit required documentation, and follow up with finance and logistics departments for timely processing and clearance
Monitoring & Reporting: Provide regular updates on project progress, security issues, humanitarian needs, and support in MEAL (monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning) activities, including data collection and internal reporting
Capacity Building & Training: Design and deliver training for Water User Committees and WASHCOMM, assess capacity-building needs, and coordinate with HR for staff development
Compliance & Coordination: Ensure compliance with internal policies (Codes of Conduct, PSEAH), collaborate with other sectoral teams and partners, and maintain alignment with technical guidelines and strategies
Safety & Security: Monitor the local security context, report incidents, and contribute to organisational duty of care in coordination with the safety and security team.
Profile
Minimum academic qualification of B.Eng. in Civil and Water Infrastructure or related Engineering courses with at least 4 years experience with an INGO in a developing country and/or humanitarian context
Extensive field team management experience as well as security, safety, and resource management experience
Excellent project management, partnership management, and coordination skills
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
Proactive, resourceful, solutions- and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning
Strong communication skills with the ability to work with and lead project teams and partners to deliver innovative programs
Ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards, and cope in stressful or hostile environments, including travelling to deep field locations and conducting partner visits.
