We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Legal and Institution Strengthening (LIS) Officer

Location: Sokoto
Employment Type: Full-time

Primary Responsibilities

• The Legal and Institutional Strengthening (LIS) Officer will play a key role in strengthening legal frameworks, enhancing institutional capacity, and improving access to justice for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable populations.
• The role requires close collaboration with state government agencies, legal institutions, and civil society organizations to ensure effective legal protection and institutional reforms.

Generic Responsibilities

• Work closely with state government agencies to review, develop, and strengthen legal frameworks that support IDP rights and protection.
• Advocate for policy reforms and institutional changes to enhance access to justice for vulnerable populations.
• Provide technical support in drafting and reviewing legal documents, policies, and regulations related to humanitarian and protection responses.
• Strengthen the capacity of government institutions, judicial bodies, and law enforcement agencies on human rights, protection laws, and legal aid services.
• Organize training sessions, workshops, and technical support for state and local government actors on institutional strengthening.
• Establish and maintain strong partnerships with legal aid providers, bar associations, and human rights organizations to improve service delivery.
• Support the design and implementation of legal aid programs to assist IDPs and vulnerable communities in navigating legal challenges.
• Facilitate legal awareness campaigns, mobile legal clinics, and dispute resolution mechanisms within IDP camps and host communities.
• Monitor and document human rights violations, ensuring proper legal interventions and referrals.
• Serve as a liaison between the organization and state government ministries, ensuring alignment with national policies and legal frameworks.
• Participate in coordination meetings with government agencies, humanitarian actors, and legal institutions to enhance collaboration and response efforts.
• Support institutional reforms by assessing gaps in legal service delivery and recommending improvements to government partners.
• Track progress on legal and institutional strengthening initiatives, ensuring compliance with project objectives and donor requirements.
• Prepare reports, policy briefs, and documentation on legal interventions and advocacy efforts.
• Conduct periodic assessments to measure the impact of legal aid and institutional strengthening programs.

Minimum Required Education & Experience

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Law (LL.B) or Social Sciences from a recognized institution. A degree in Law is an added advantage.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience working with key stakeholders to strengthen legal systems, particularly in humanitarian or displacement settings.
• Strong understanding of legal frameworks, human rights, and access to justice for vulnerable populations, including IDPs.
• Experience implementing legal aid, institutional capacity strengthening, and policy advocacy programs.
• Proven ability to engage and coordinate with government institutions, civil society organizations, and community-based structures to improve legal protection mechanisms.
