Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Safety Officer to join our team, with a specific focus on safety protocols for construction projects in swampy, wetland, and waterlogged areas.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment, mitigating risks, and adhering to safety regulations in environments that present unique hazards, such as unstable ground, water conditions, and environmental concerns.
As a Safety Officer, you will play a vital role in maintaining the well-being of all personnel while ensuring the project meets all regulatory safety standards.
Responsibilities
Conduct regular safety inspections on construction sites, particularly in swampy, wetland, and waterlogged areas, identifying potential hazards such as unstable soil, flooding risks, and wildlife concerns.
Implement and enforce safety protocols specific to the challenges of swampy or aquatic construction environments, including proper handling of heavy machinery, tools, and materials in slippery or soft-ground conditions.
Develop and implement site-specific safety plans and risk assessments, ensuring they comply with all local, state, and federal safety regulations and environmental laws.
Lead safety training sessions for all team members, educating workers on the unique risks associated with swampy terrain, waterlogged environments, and wetlands.
Monitor and report on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring all workers are equipped with appropriate gear for the environment (e.g., waterproof clothing, slip-resistant footwear, life vests).
Investigate accidents or near-misses on-site, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions to prevent future incidents.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and environmental specialists to ensure that safety and environmental protection are seamlessly integrated into construction processes.
Ensure proper emergency response protocols are in place, including evacuation plans for flood risks, hazardous wildlife, or unstable ground conditions.
Conduct regular safety drills, including emergency evacuations, first-aid training, and other critical safety procedures.
Oversee compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.), ensuring all necessary documentation is maintained.
Review and approve work permits for high-risk activities such as working near water bodies, operating machinery on soft ground, or handling hazardous materials.
Act as the point of contact for safety concerns, responding to questions from workers, contractors, and site management.
Ensure that all machinery and equipment used on-site is properly maintained and meets safety standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
Certification in Occupational Safety (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour, NEBOSH, or equivalent).
Minimum of [5] years of experience as a Safety Officer, with specific experience in swampy, wetland, or water-logged construction environments.
In-depth knowledge of safety protocols, hazard analysis, and risk management in construction sites.
Strong understanding of environmental laws, regulations, and best practices for construction in sensitive wetland and swamp areas.
Ability to develop safety plans and emergency procedures for challenging terrains, including those that may be affected by flooding or water-related risks.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to train and educate workers, as well as to collaborate effectively with management and external authorities.
Detail-oriented and proactive with a strong sense of responsibility for worker safety and environmental protection.
Preferred Skills:
First Aid and CPR certification.
Experience working with heavy machinery and construction equipment in challenging terrains.
Ability to identify and mitigate risks associated with hazardous wildlife, flooding, and environmental hazards in swampy areas.
Experience with environmental protection and sustainability practices, particularly in sensitive wetlands.
