Job Title: Linesman
Location: Plateau, Nigeria
Division / Function: Operations and Maintenance
Reports to: Senior Manager, Operational Excellence.
Role Summary
We are seeking a Linesman who will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical power distribution systems.
This role ensures that power lines, equipment, and systems function properly from the power generation source to customers' meters.
The Lineman will work in various environmental conditions, often at great heights or underground, ensuring safety, efficiency, and adherence to regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Maintenance:
Install and maintain overhead and underground electrical power lines, transformers, switches, and other related equipment.
Set up power lines, utility poles, and auxiliary equipment such as transformers and conductors.
Install meters at customer premises and ensure proper connections and functioning.
Repairs & Troubleshooting:
Respond to outages and electrical faults by repairing or replacing power lines and associated infrastructure.
Perform troubleshooting to identify faults in power distribution systems and make timely repairs.
Repair or replace damaged or malfunctioning components such as transformers, fuses, insulators, and circuit breakers.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure adherence to safety regulations and company policies when working with high-voltage lines and equipment.
Conduct regular inspections of power lines to detect and fix potential hazards, ensuring continuous power delivery and minimizing risks.
Safeguard oneself and the team by using personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining safety protocols at all times, especially when working at heights or in confined spaces.
Infrastructure Development:
Dig trenches and install conduits for underground electrical systems.
Climb utility poles or use equipment to install, repair, or replace overhead power lines.
Install new power lines and electrical infrastructure as needed for expansions or upgrades.
Technical Tasks:
Work with live and dead circuits, ensuring proper de-energization before conducting maintenance tasks.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and work orders for accurate installation and repairs.
Ensure all installations and repairs are compliant with industry standards and government regulations.
Collaboration & Reporting:
Collaborate with other field staff, engineers, and supervisors to ensure smooth operation of the electrical distribution system.
Maintain accurate records of work completed, including maintenance logs, repairs, inspections, and safety checks.
Report any safety hazards, incidents, or delays promptly to the supervisor.
Emergency Response:
Participate in emergency response operations such as restoring power during outages caused by natural disasters, accidents, or other disruptions.
Be on standby for on-call shifts to attend to urgent repairs, particularly during bad weather or crises.
Location and Travel:
This role is based in Plateau, Nigeria. Frequent travel Within the State for Site Identification and Scoping activities is required.
Qualifications
Diploma or certification in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
Minimum of 2-5 years of experience working with power lines, electrical systems, or related infrastructure.
Electrical Safety Certifications (HSE, OSHA), Certified Lineman Training preferred.
Strong technical skills in electrical systems and tools.
Ability to read technical blueprints and work orders.
Physical stamina and strength, with experience working at heights and in various weather conditions.
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail and safety.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Ability to climb utility poles, work at heights, and enter confined spaces.
Flexibility to work long hours, weekends, or on-call shifts as needed.
Ability to operate heavy machinery such as boom trucks and trenchers.
