Job Description
The Financial Controller will be responsible for not only managing the financial health of the business but also providing strategic guidance to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the supermarket chain.
Responsibilities
Financial Reporting: The Financial Controller is responsible for preparing and presenting accurate and timely financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements. These reports help senior management make informed decisions about the supermarket's financial performance.
Budgeting and Forecasting: They play a crucial role in the budgeting process, working with department heads to establish financial goals and creating budgets that align with the supermarket's strategic objectives. They also monitor performance against these budgets and provide insights into variances.
Financial Analysis: Conducting financial analysis is essential to identify trends, opportunities, and areas of improvement. Financial Controllers analyze key financial metrics and KPIs to inform decision-making and optimize financial performance.
Compliance: Ensuring compliance with accounting standards, tax laws, and financial regulations is a critical part of the role. This includes keeping up-to-date with changes in financial reporting standards and ensuring that the supermarket's financial practices are in line with these standards.
Internal Control: Financial Controllers establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the supermarket's assets and prevent fraud or mismanagement of funds. This includes implementing and monitoring accounting procedures and policies.
Audit Coordination: They often work closely with external auditors during financial audits to provide necessary documentation, answer inquiries, and address audit findings and recommendations.
Cash Management: Managing the supermarket's cash flow is vital. Financial Controllers oversee cash management practices, including monitoring cash reserves, optimizing working capital, and managing banking relationships.
Cost Control: Identifying cost-saving opportunities and implementing cost control measures is part of the role. This can involve assessing operational processes and finding ways to reduce expenses while maintaining quality.
Financial Strategy: Collaborating with senior management to develop and execute financial strategies that align with the supermarket's long-term goals and growth objectives.
Team Leadership: Financial Controllers typically lead a team of finance professionals, including accountants and financial analysts. They are responsible for recruiting, training, and managing their team.
Risk Management: Identifying financial risks and developing strategies to mitigate them is crucial. This includes assessing market risks, credit risks, and operational risks that could impact the supermarket's financial stability.
Technology and System: Implementing and managing financial systems and software to streamline financial processes and reporting.
Requirements
Proven experience as finance controller or head of account, finance officer, or in a comparable position.
Expertise in corporate financial law and risk management techniques
Expertise in data analysis and forecasting techniques
Expertise with Microsoft Office and financial management software (e.g. SAP)
Capacity for strategizing and problem-solving
Strong leadership and management abilities
Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
A rational intellect who is at ease with numbers
General Management Competencies/Requirements:

Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate effectively
Communication Skills
First degree in Accounting or any related discipline from a reputable institution ACA/ACCA certification is mandatory.
Over 8 years of post-graduate relevant work experience across various aspects of the Accounting
function (receivables, payables, credit control, budgeting, reporting, forecasting analytics, etc.)
Minimum of four (4) years in supervising or managing teams, with a track record of success.
Previous experience in Inventory and/or Vendor Management would be a definite plus. Advanced accounting knowledge, including experience in financial reporting using IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards).
Working knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the use of various accounting packages and systems.
Experience in financial modelling and reporting.
A good understanding of trends, opportunities, and regulatory/statutory requirements relating to the
Retail/FMCG Industry in Nigeria.
