Job Summary
The Accountant is responsible for managing financial transactions, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the financial health of the organization. This role requires a strong understanding of healthcare finance and accounting principles to effectively manage the unique financial aspects of a healthcare environment.
Main Duties
Record all financial transactions accurately in the accounting system, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll.
Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with Nigerian accounting standards.
Regularly reconcile bank statements with internal records to ensure accuracy and identify discrepancies.
Monitor cash flow to ensure sufficient funds are available for operational needs.
Support the preparation of annual budgets by providing historical data and projections based on departmental needs.
Track actual expenditures against budgeted amounts, providing variance analysis and recommendations for corrective actions.
Maintain compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and hospital policies regarding financial practices.
Assist in the preparation of tax returns and ensure timely submission to relevant authorities.
Collaborate with internal and external auditors during audits to provide necessary documentation and explanations regarding financial records.
Assist in developing and enforcing internal controls to safeguard hospital assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Participate in regular assessments of financial processes for potential risks, recommending improvements as needed.
Ensure accurate billing of patients for services rendered, including coordination with insurance providers for claims processing.
Monitor outstanding patient accounts, follow up on overdue payments, and resolve billing disputes.
Collaborate with department heads to understand their financial needs and provide support in managing their budgets.
Attend finance department meetings to discuss ongoing projects, challenges, and updates on financial performance.
Compile comprehensive reports for management that include analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) related to financial performance.
Conduct detailed analyses of financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings or revenue enhancement.
Educate staff on financial policies and procedures to foster a culture of accountability within the organization.
Build relationships with key stakeholders in the community to enhance the hospital's reputation.
Keep abreast of changes in accounting standards, regulations, and best practices relevant to healthcare finance.
Engage in professional development activities to enhance accounting skills and knowledge specific to healthcare finance
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting (required).
Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting roles, preferably within a healthcare setting.
Strong knowledge of Nigerian accounting standards and healthcare finance regulations.
Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage) and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.
Strong communication skills for effective interaction with patients, staff, and external stakeholders.
