Green Habitat Initiative (GHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the achievement of SDG 6 (clean water), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) in Nigeria. Since its incorporation in 2016, GHI has worked in diverse sectors, including environmental sustainability, urban planning, sustainable urban development, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), solid waste management, recycling, and environmental activism.

GHI has partnered with prominent local and international organizations, such as UNEP, USAID, VINNOVA Group Sweden, French Institute Nigeria, Energies 2050, Embassies of Germany, France, and Czech, The Water Mechanics, Baze University, and others, to implement impactful projects that benefit communities across Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Program Officer

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-time

Position Overview

  • The Programme Officer will play a vital role in implementing, monitoring, and managing programs that align with GHI’s strategic objectives.
  • This position requires a dynamic and motivated individual who can work collaboratively with stakeholders, ensure the delivery of impactful results, and contribute to the overall growth and success of GHI.
  • The ideal candidate will be a versatile team player, detail-oriented, possess strong organisational skills, and demonstrate proficiency in ICT. While he/she will be stationed at our HQ in Abuja, the person is expected to extend the support and functions across all our project offices across the country.

Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation and Coordination:

  • Support the planning, execution, and management of programs to ensure timely and effective delivery of outcomes.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to achieve program objectives.
  • Support logistics and operational activities toward effective project/program delivery.

Research and Prospecting:

  • Conduct comprehensive research to identify potential grant opportunities from international organizations, foundations, and corporate donors whose funding priorities align with organizational goals.
  • Maintain a database of grantmakers, including key deadlines, eligibility requirements, and contact information.

Proposal Development:

  • Develop compelling, well-structured, and tailored grant proposals, ensuring alignment with donor priorities and organizational goals.
  • Draft and edit grant narratives, budgets, and supporting documentation with attention to clarity, impact, and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with program teams to articulate project objectives, expected outcomes, and implementation strategies in grant submissions.

Budgeting and Compliance:

  • Work with finance teams to prepare detailed and compliant budgets for grant applications.
  • Ensure that proposed budgets meet donor requirements and provide realistic financial projections.

Grant Reporting:

  • Prepare and submit progress reports, financial updates, and impact assessments to funders as required.
  • Track grant performance metrics and ensure compliance with grant terms and conditions.

Donor Research and Trends Analysis:

  • Monitor trends in the funding landscape and recommend strategies to position the organization competitively for emerging opportunities.
  • Compile reports on funding trends and donor activities to inform decision-making and long-term fundraising strategies.

Grant Tracking and Administration:

  • Maintain accurate records of grant submissions, awards, and deadlines using grant management systems.
  • Ensure timely submission of renewal applications or proposals for continued funding.

Coordination and Team Collaboration:

  • Work with internal teams to gather relevant data, success stories, and supporting documents for grant proposals.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with cross-functional teams to review funding opportunities and application progress.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, and donors.
  • Represent GHI in meetings, workshops, and other engagements to promote program goals.

Budget Management:

  • Assist in preparing and monitoring program budgets to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements and financial protocols.
  • Support in preparing and executing activity financial memos in line with operating budgets.

Advocacy and Communication:

  • Contribute to the development of communication materials to highlight program achievements.
  • Lead initiatives to communicate GHI’s programs and achievements on social media channels, websites, and other media outlets.

Research and Development:

  • Conduct research to inform program development and identify funding opportunities.
  • Stay updated on best practices in sustainable development and integrate them into GHI’s initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in Development Studies, Environmental Management, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in program coordination or a similar role, in the non-profit sector.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders, board members, and external partners.
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines while under pressure.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Certificates in project management, grant writing, and stakeholder engagement (if the candidate doesn't have them, he/she must provide them during probation. It is thus a requirement for confirmation.)
  • Competency in office software and digital communication tools. Experience using project management software (e.g., Clickup, Slack, etc) is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 11, SDG 13 and sustainability principles
  • Knowledge of sustainable development, climate resilience, and environmental conservation principles is desirable.
  • Ability to work in diverse and dynamic environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
