Job Description

• A lawyer is a legal professional trained toadvise clients on legal matters, represent them in court proceedings, draft legal documents like contracts and wills, and ensure their rights are protected by upholding the law, often specializing in a specific area of law like corporate, family, or criminal law;requiring a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and passing a bar exam to practice.

Key responsibilities of a lawyer
Client consultation:

• Meeting with clients to understand their legal issues, gather relevant information, and provide legal advice.

Legal research:

• Analyzing case law, statutes, and regulations to build a strong legal argument for their client's case.

Document drafting:

• Preparing and reviewing legal documents such as contracts, wills, agreements, and court filings.

Negotiation:

• Engaging in discussions with opposing parties to reach settlements or agreements outside of court.

Representation in court:

• Appearing in court hearings, presenting evidence, examining witnesses, and arguing on behalf of their clients.

Litigation:

• Managing lawsuits through the legal process, including discovery, motions, and appeals

Compliance advice:

• Advising clients on legal compliance issues related to their business practices

Advocacy:

• May advocate for changes in laws or policies through lobbying or legal reform efforts

Specialization areas of law (examples):

• Corporate law:Advising businesses on legal matters related to mergers, acquisitions, contracts, and securities
• Family law:Handling legal issues related to divorce, child custody, child support, and spousal support
• Criminal defense:Representing individuals accused of crimes in court
• Real estate law:Assisting clients with legal matters related to buying, selling, and leasing property
• Intellectual property law:Protecting clients' intellectual property rights like patents, trademarks, and copyrights
• Tax law:Advising clients on tax compliance and tax planning strategies

Required qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
• Passing the bar exam in the jurisdiction where they intend to practice

Salary
N150,000 - N200,000 per month.
