Background
The Public Health Information Surveillance Solutions and Systems (PHIS3) project is funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to strengthen systems aimed at improving HIV service delivery and other public health interventions in Nigeria. Through continuous quality improvement, monitoring and evaluation, surveillance, health informatics, and laboratory quality management, the project supports PEPFAR, the Government of Nigeria, and other stakeholders.
PHIS3 focuses on enhancing the national health data repository and related systems to reduce duplication, harmonize fragmented information systems, and improve monitoring and tracking of health trends and priorities. By leveraging these systems, we aim to provide timely and actionable insights to improve health outcomes, particularly for HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, and other public health challenges.
As part of the Data Management and Analysis Department, we are seeking a Data Analysis and Visualization Specialist to play a pivotal role in extracting, analyzing, and visualizing data to support decision-making and program performance monitoring.
Position Summary
The Data Analysis and Visualization Specialist will focus on transforming health data into actionable insights through advanced analytics and compelling visualizations.
The candidate will work collaboratively with the M&E, Data Science teams, and Health Informatics Department, and other stakeholders to ensure high-quality data reporting and support quality improvement initiatives.
This role will contribute significantly to monitoring progress, identifying bottlenecks, and facilitating data-driven decision-making to strengthen public health programs.
The specialist will report to the Director of Data Management and Analytics and work closely with the Data Science and M&E leads.
Duties and Responsibilities
Data Analysis and Visualization:
Extract, clean, and process data from databases such as DHIS2, EMR systems, and the national data repository.
Perform advanced data analysis to uncover trends, insights, and areas for quality improvement.
Create dashboards, reports, and visualizations using tools like Power BI, Tableau, and Python to support routine monitoring and evaluation.
Collaborate with program teams to develop visual stories and presentations for stakeholders at various levels.
Monitoring and Evaluation Support:
Analyze program performance data to track key indicators and recommend improvement strategies.
Generate regular performance reports for PEPFAR, government, and other stakeholders.
Contribute to quality improvement initiatives by identifying data-driven solutions.
Capacity Building and Collaboration:
Support training efforts for stakeholders on data analysis, interpretation, and visualization techniques.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment of data outputs with program needs.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Work with PEPFAR, government agencies, and implementing partners to provide tailored analytics and visualizations.
Present data insights to technical and non-technical audiences, ensuring clarity and actionable recommendations.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Public Health, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field (a master’s degree is preferred).
3–5 years of experience in data analysis and visualization, preferably in the public health sector.
Experience working with large datasets and national health data systems, such as DHIS2 or EMRs.
Familiarity with PEPFAR-supported programs and indicators is highly desirable.
Certification in data visualization tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, Tableau) or programming is an advantage.
Skills and Competency Requirements
Technical Expertise:
Proficiency in data analysis tools such as R, Python, or Stata.
Advanced skills in data visualization platforms, including Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.
Knowledge of database querying using SQL and familiarity with data integration tools.
Strong command of statistical techniques, including trend analysis and predictive modeling.
Public Health Knowledge:
Familiarity with public health program monitoring and evaluation, including HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases.
Experience working with datasets from DHIS2, EMR systems, or other health surveillance platforms.
Analytical and Visualization Skills:
Ability to translate complex datasets into clear and visually engaging dashboards and reports.
Proficient in creating dynamic, real-time visualizations for decision-making.
Communication and Collaboration:
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings to diverse audiences.
Proven experience working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
