Description
The Heavy Mechanic will be responsible for the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of various types of heavy machinery, including construction equipment, trucks, and industrial machines. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical background, the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues, and a commitment to safety and efficiency. This role requires hands-on expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repair:
Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a range of heavy equipment including but not limited to bulldozers, excavators, cranes, backhoes, dump trucks, and other machinery.
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems in machinery.
Replace or repair worn-out parts, engines, transmissions, and other components.
Diagnostic and Inspection:
Conduct regular inspections of equipment to ensure it operates at peak efficiency and safety.
Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical issues and determine appropriate corrective actions.
Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections for compliance and inventory management.
Safety and Compliance:
Follow company safety protocols, including the proper handling of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.
Ensure that all repairs and maintenance activities comply with relevant safety regulations and industry standards.
Maintain a safe and organized work environment, reporting any safety hazards or concerns immediately.
Parts Management:
Work with inventory management systems to track parts and materials used in repairs.
Assist with the ordering and stocking of parts to ensure timely availability for repairs.
Manage the proper disposal of used parts and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
Collaboration and Communication:
Coordinate with the maintenance supervisor and other team members to schedule repairs and ensure equipment downtime is minimized.
Communicate effectively with project managers to ensure machinery is available and operational when needed.
Provide updates on repair status, issues found, and parts needed.
Education, Qualification and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent; a Diploma or certification in heavy equipment mechanics, diesel mechanics, or related fields is highly preferred.
Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in heavy equipment maintenance or a similar field.
Experience working with construction or industrial machinery such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, cranes, or trucks is required.
Skills and Competencies:
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Familiarity with the operation of diagnostic tools, manuals, and schematics to troubleshoot and repair machinery.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment.
Effective communication skills to report issues and provide updates to management.

Licensing and Certifications:
Valid driver’s license.
Certification in heavy equipment maintenance, diesel mechanics, or related fields is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift heavy objects.
Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including bending, kneeling, crouching, and lifting.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors.
Ability to perform work at heights and in confined spaces when necessary.
