Job Overview
The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for overseeing and managing all mechanical engineering aspects of an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) project.
This includes design, technical specifications, procurement support, and project execution, ensuring that the project is completed safely, within budget, and on schedule.
The role involves coordinating and leading a multidisciplinary engineering team, collaborating with other departments, and liaising with clients and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management:
Lead and manage mechanical engineering tasks across multiple stages of the project, from design to commissioning.
Ensure mechanical systems are designed and installed to meet client requirements, codes, and standards.
Develop and monitor project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project delivery.
Participate in project meetings and progress reviews with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
Support risk management processes and resolve project-related technical challenges.
Design and Engineering:
Lead the mechanical design team in the development of mechanical systems, equipment, and components, ensuring compliance with project specifications.
Review and approve mechanical design drawings, calculations, and documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to engineering standards.
Review vendor equipment packages and specifications, ensuring they meet project requirements.
Ensure all mechanical engineering work follows safety, quality, and environmental regulations.
Coordination and Team Leadership:
Mentor and lead mechanical engineers, designers, and other technical staff, providing guidance and direction to meet project goals.
Coordinate the mechanical engineering work with other disciplines (civil, electrical, structural, etc.) and ensure integration with the overall project.
Facilitate communication between the engineering team and other departments such as procurement, construction, and commissioning.
Procurement Support:
Provide input to procurement teams regarding mechanical equipment and materials selection.
Participate in the review of vendor proposals and assist with technical evaluations of mechanical equipment and systems.
Monitor vendor performance to ensure timely delivery and compliance with technical specifications.
Quality Control and Compliance:
Ensure mechanical engineering work complies with relevant codes, standards, and industry best practices.
Lead the development and review of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures for mechanical systems.
Oversee the resolution of any non-conformance issues related to mechanical systems.
Commissioning and Handover:
Assist with the commissioning of mechanical systems and support start-up operations.
Ensure the mechanical engineering team provides timely technical support during the commissioning phase.
Ensure smooth handover of mechanical systems to operations and provide necessary training to operations teams.
Health, Safety, and Environmental:
Promote and ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental policies throughout the project lifecycle.
Conduct safety audits and risk assessments related to mechanical systems.
Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with at least 5 years in a lead role on EPCM projects.
Strong knowledge of mechanical systems design, including HVAC, piping, pressure vessels, pumps, compressors, and rotating equipment.
Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations (ASME, API, ASHRAE, etc.).
Experience with project management and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams.
Proficient in engineering software (AutoCAD, Revit, CAESAR II, AFT Fathom, etc.).
Strong understanding of procurement processes and vendor management.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
