Job Title: Underwriter, SME Lending

Location: Lagos

The Position

• The Underwriter for SME lending will be responsible for evaluating loan applications from SMEs and determining the risk associated with each proposal.
• You will analyze financial data, assess applicants’ creditworthiness, and make informed recommendations to ensure sound lending decisions.

Responsibilities
In this role, you will:

• Analyze loan applications and supporting documentation to determine eligibility and compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
• Evaluate applicants’ financial histories, credit reports, and collateral to assess risk levels and make informed underwriting decisions.
• Approve or deny loan applications based on thorough analysis and risk assessment. Recommend alternative financing solutions where appropriate.
• Work closely with loan officers, credit analysts, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information and clarify any issues related to applications.
• Prepare and maintain detailed documentation of underwriting decisions, including rationale and any conditions for approval.
• Stay updated on market trends, economic conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact underwriting policies and procedures.
• Communicate effectively with applicants regarding underwriting decisions, required documentation, and any follow-up actions needed.

Requirements
We are looking for people with:

• Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., CIB, ACIB) are a plus.
• 3+ years of experience in underwriting SMEs or credit analysis within the banking or financial services sector in Nigeria.
• Strong analytical skills with proficiency in evaluating financial statements and credit reports.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Knowledge of relevant regulations and compliance standards in the Nigerian banking sector.
• Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
