Job Title: Dental Therapist

Job Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:
Perform comprehensive oral health assessments, including periodontal charting, plaque and bleeding indices, and oral cancer screenings.
Provide routine and advanced preventive dental treatments, such as scaling, polishing, fluoride applications, and placement of dental sealants.
Take dental radiographs (X-rays) as needed to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning, ensuring proper radiographic technique and safety protocols.
Conduct temporary restorations, including basic fillings, under the supervision of a dentist.
Assist dentists with advanced procedures such as complex restorations, root canal treatments, and surgical extractions, ensuring efficient patient care.
Manage dental emergencies such as acute infections, abscesses, or trauma by providing first aid and coordinating further care with dentists.
Patient-Centered Care:
Provide patient education on oral hygiene practices, personalized to each patient’s needs, including proper brushing techniques, flossing, and dietary advice.
Offer smoking cessation counseling and advice on how lifestyle habits affect oral and general health.
Create and implement individualized preventive care plans for patients, ensuring follow-up and regular monitoring of oral health status.
Deliver high-quality customer service by addressing patient concerns, ensuring comfort during treatment, and fostering a welcoming clinic environment.
Maintain a professional, empathetic demeanor when dealing with anxious patients, particularly children or those with dental phobias.
Infection Control and Safety:
Adhere to strict infection control protocols, ensuring that the clinical environment is sanitized and safe for both patients and staff.
Ensure that all dental instruments are properly sterilized and that disposable materials are used according to clinic policies.
Maintain compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper waste disposal and management of hazardous materials.
Advanced Clinical Skills and Continuing Education:
Keep up-to-date with the latest developments in dental therapy, including new preventive treatments, techniques, and technologies used in high-end private dental care.
Attend continuing professional development (CPD) workshops and seminars to maintain and enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
Utilize modern dental equipment and software for digital radiography, patient records, and treatment planning.
Collaborate with specialists in orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics to provide holistic, integrated care to patients requiring multidisciplinary treatment.
Team Collaboration and Coordination:
Work closely with dentists, dental nurses, and other support staff to ensure seamless patient care.
Assist with scheduling patient appointments, preparing treatment rooms, and managing patient flow within the clinic.
Participate in case discussions and treatment planning meetings with the dental team to optimize patient care outcomes.
Administrative and Record-Keeping Responsibilities:
Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including treatment provided, diagnostic findings, and progress notes, ensuring confidentiality.
Prepare reports on patient progress and provide recommendations for follow-up treatments or referrals.
Manage dental inventory, ensuring the availability of necessary materials and equipment for daily operations.
Educational Requirements and Qualifications
Higher National Diploma (HND) in Dental Therapy from a recognized institution.
Full registration with the Dental Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria (DTRBN).
Valid practicing license from the DTRBN.
Experience in a private practice setting or upscale clinic is an added advantage.
Additional certifications or training in advanced dental techniques or aesthetic treatments are a plus.
