West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) Nigeria is the Nigerian Country Office of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), a sub-regional NGO with regional secretariat based in Accra, Ghana, whose mission is to enable and facilitate the development of mechanisms for cooperation among civil society-based peacebuilding practitioners and organizations in West Africa by promoting cooperative responses to violent conflicts; providing the structure through which these practitioners and institutions will regularly exchange experience and information on issues of peacebuilding, conflict transformation, social, religious and political reconciliation; and promoting West Africa’s social and cultural values as resources for peacebuilding.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Driver
Location: Mabuchi, Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Full-Time position with 1 year contract, renewable subject to availability of funding
General Position Summary
The Driver will provide reliable and safe driving services for WANEP-Nigeria, ensuring the safe transport of staff, officials, and visitors to field locations across the North-Central and North-West regions. This role requires excellent driving skills, a deep sense of responsibility, and knowledge of security protocols.
The Driver will uphold the highest standards of discretion and integrity while ensuring timely, secure, and efficient transportation for staff and materials. A client-oriented approach and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds are essential. Additionally, the Driver will assist with general office running duties as required by team members.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Driving Services:
Provide reliable and safe driving services by transporting WANEP staff, officials, and visitors to and from the field, meetings, and other locations within North-Central and North- West regions.
Transport mail, documentation, and office supplies as required.
Ensure on-time and safe arrivals for meetings and official appointments, keeping abreast of traffic conditions and local security risks.
Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport, assisting with visa, and customs formalities, and transporting them to their destinations.
Vehicle Maintenance and Management:
Conduct minor repairs and regular cleaning of the vehicle(s).
Monitor the condition of the vehicle(s), ensuring they are in good running order; arrange for major repairs and regular servicing as necessary.
Maintain daily vehicle logs, including fuel usage, trips, and maintenance records.
Assist in the preparation of vehicle maintenance schedules and history reports.
Documentation and Legal Compliance:
Ensure all vehicle insurance, tax, and registration formalities are up-to-date and compliant with local regulations.
Maintain and provide necessary reports on the status of the vehicle as requested by management.
Maintain vehicle log sheets in accordance with WANEP-Nigeria policies/regulations.
Safety and Security:
Ensure the safety and security of passengers by adhering to driving and security protocols.
Maintain knowledge of local road conditions, safety hazards, and security risks in areas of travel, ensuring all travel routes are planned to ensure the security of passengers.
Follow all local and international driving laws, including defensive driving practices.
Ensure compliance with security procedures and policies as determined by WANEP-Nigeria.
Assisting with Administration and Office Running:
Assist with general administrative duties as required by team members, including running errands, picking up documents, or delivering materials to various locations.
Reports to the Operations Manager as may be required.
Assist with day-to-day office operations, such as organizing deliveries, handling office supplies, and supporting staff members with logistics as needed.
Load and unload materials, equipment, or office supplies for field activities or meetings.
Team Support and Mentoring:
Assist in guiding and coaching junior drivers as appropriate, ensuring adherence to safe driving practices and organizational protocols.
Communication and Translation:
Act as a local language translator for passengers, when necessary, to assist in communication with community members and stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Must possess at least a National Diploma (ND) in any field.
Knowledge and Experience:
A valid driver’s license.
5-10 years of experience as a driver, with a proven safe driving record especially driving 4WD vehicles.
Knowledge of local roads, driving regulations, and conditions especially in the North-Central and North-West regions of Nigeria.
Strong knowledge of chauffeur protocol, security awareness, and driving safety procedures, including defensive driving skills.
Ability to conduct minor vehicle repairs and ensure vehicles are in good operational condition.
Familiarity with handling transportation logistics for international or official visitors is a plus.
Must know the actions to be taken in the event of an accident.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people. (Fluency in Hausa is an added advantage)
Strong problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Attention to detail, including vehicle maintenance logs and safety protocols.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to maintain punctuality and adhere to travel schedules.
Working Conditions:
The position involves frequent travel to field sites within the North Central and North-West regions.
Occasional overnight stays may be required, depending on the travel schedule and location.
The Driver will also assist with general office running duties, and supporting staff needs in daily administrative tasks.
This position is essential to ensure that WANEP-Nigeria’s operations run smoothly, with reliable transportation for staff and materials, while also contributing to the organization’s administrative efficiency.
The Driver will play a key role in supporting WANEP-Nigeria’s peacebuilding and development initiatives across the regions.
