Job Title: Media Programme Officer
Location: Abuja (FCT)
Job Summary
We seek a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team as a Media programme Officer.
The successful candidate will support the implementation of the Solutions Journalism Africa Initiative, the Nigeria Media Innovation Program and media-focused tracks of our Global Advocacy Project, with a strong focus on using media to drive policy change and advance our advocacy efforts.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about leveraging media, journalism, strategic communication and advocacy to create meaningful social impact and influence positive public health policies.
Support the design, planning, and implementation of media-focused projects, particularly the Solutions Journalism Africa Initiative, the Global Advocacy Project, the Nigeria Media Innovation Program, and future media-focused projects implemented by the organisation.
Coordinate with partners, stakeholders, and journalists to ensure project deliverables are met within set timelines.
Assist in tracking project outcomes, monitoring progress, and reporting on activities.
Support community engagement for journalism/media-related projects implemented by Nigeria Health Watch.
Media Engagement:
Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media organizations, and other key stakeholders to amplify project visibility.
Collaborate with media professionals to develop and disseminate content that drives policy change.
Identify and engage relevant media platforms to promote solutions-based journalism and advocacy.
Content Development & Storytelling:
Assist in creating, curating, and editing high-quality content, including articles, blogs, press releases, and social media content, aligned with project goals.
Support the development of multimedia resources (videos, podcasts, illustrations) to enhance storytelling and public engagement.
Advocacy & Policy Support:
Support the advocacy team to design and implement media strategies that support ongoing policy advocacy efforts.
Identify and amplify stories demonstrating solutions to Africa’s pressing health and social challenges.
Help facilitate media coverage of key advocacy events, campaigns, and public dialogues.
Monitoring & Evaluation:
Assist in collecting and analysing data on the impact of media activities related to advocacy and policy change.
Develop reports and insights based on media engagement outcomes, ensuring projects achieve their goals.
Qualification, Essential Competencies & Skills
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, development studies, or a related field.
2-4 years of experience in media, journalism, or communications, ideally focusing on advocacy or policy-driven initiatives.
Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Experience in engaging with journalists and media organizations and understanding how to leverage media for advocacy.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, proven ability to create compelling content.
Experience in policy advocacy, solutions journalism, or media-related development projects is highly desirable.
Proficient in media relations and digital communication tools (social media, online collaboration tools etc.).
Strong networking and relationship-building skills, particularly with Pan African media professionals.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Analytical mindset with the ability to track and report on project impact.
Creative problem-solver interested in innovative approaches to journalism and advocacy, including using AI in media.
Passion for social change, policy advocacy, and media-driven impact.
