Description
The Deputy Managing Director (DMD) in the oil and gas industry is a senior executive role responsible for supporting the Managing Director in overseeing operations, implementing business strategies, and driving growth. The DMD plays a critical role in managing high-level functions, such as production, safety, finance, and business development.
This position requires a deep understanding of the oil and gas sector, strong leadership skills, and the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, industry partners, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Collaborate with the Managing Director and executive team to develop and implement the company’s strategic plan, aligning business operations with long-term objectives.
Oversee strategic initiatives, projects, and programs, ensuring they support the company’s growth, sustainability, and operational excellence goals.
Lead in identifying new market opportunities, expansion strategies, and potential areas for diversification within the oil and gas industry.
Operational Management:
Oversee day-to-day operations to ensure effective, efficient, and safe practices across all departments, including exploration, production, engineering, and health and safety.
Implement operational policies and procedures to improve efficiency, control costs, and mitigate risks.
Ensure compliance with industry regulations, standards, and corporate policies, regularly reviewing and updating practices to align with evolving regulatory requirements.
Financial Oversight:
Work closely with the finance team to develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and financial performance metrics.
Review and approve major investments, expenses, and project proposals, ensuring they align with the company’s financial strategy and goals.
Analyze financial and operational data to identify trends, evaluate performance, and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Risk Management and Compliance:
Proactively identify, assess, and manage risks related to operations, finance, safety, and environmental impact.
Oversee health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs to ensure the highest standards of safety for employees, contractors, and communities.
Act as a key contact for regulatory agencies, ensuring all activities comply with relevant regulations, standards, and best practices in the oil and gas industry.
Stakeholder Relations:
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry partners, regulatory bodies, investors, and community groups.
Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and government meetings to promote the company’s interests and initiatives.
Communicate business objectives, performance updates, and strategic priorities to stakeholders, ensuring transparency and fostering trust.
Leadership Development and Team Management:
Provide mentorship and guidance to senior managers, developing a high performance culture and promoting leadership excellence.
Support talent management, succession planning, and professional development initiatives to build a skilled, motivated, and aligned workforce.
Foster a collaborative work environment that encourages innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Business Development and Expansion:
Identify and assess opportunities for expansion, mergers, and acquisitions and lead due diligence efforts.
Support the development of joint ventures, partnerships, and alliances to enhance the company’s market presence and operational capabilities.
Drive initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction, optimize services, and ensure alignment with market needs and expectations.
Education
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field; an advanced degree (MBA or equivalent) is preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of 15 years of senior leadership experience within the oil and gas industry, with a track record of success in operations, strategic planning, and financial management.
Skills & Competencies:
Comprehensive knowledge of the oil and gas industry, including regulations, market dynamics, and technical processes.
Proven experience in managing complex projects, budgets, and cross-functional teams.
Strong analytical skills with a high level of financial literacy and the ability to interpret and act on financial data.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills with experience building relationships with industry and government stakeholders.
Demonstrated leadership abilities, with a focus on team development, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making.
Strategic Vision: Ability to align operational and strategic goals to enhance long-term growth and profitability.
Leadership and Influence: Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, mentor, and guide senior teams.
Business Acumen: Comprehensive understanding of business principles and industry-specific knowledge to drive operational efficiency and growth.
