Summary of Position
The Director of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of ESL curricula and instructional programs.
This role requires a strong commitment to improving the English language proficiency of non-native speakers and enhancing their academic and professional opportunities.
The Director will collaborate with educators, administrators, and community stakeholders to create an inclusive and effective learning environment.
The incumbent will also teach courses either in the general education program, English major or Masters of Arts in English in accordance with the policies and procedures of the American University of Nigeria.
Detailed Listing of Responsibilities
Design, implement, and evaluate ESL programs to meet the diverse needs of learners.
Develop curriculum and instructional materials that are culturally relevant and aligned with educational standards. - Manage budgetary and resource allocation for the ESL program.
Recruit, train, and supervise ESL instructors and support staff.
Provide ongoing professional development for staff to enhance instructional practices and support student learning.
Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment.
Develop assessment tools to measure student progress and program effectiveness. Analyze data to inform instructional practices and program improvements. Prepare reports for stakeholders on program outcomes and student achievements.
Build partnerships with local organizations, schools, and businesses to support ESL learners. - Promote awareness of ESL programs within the community and among potential students.
Organize events and workshops to engage families and support student integration.
Ensure the ESL program complies with local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
Advocate for policies that support English language learners and promote equity in education.
Perform any other duties as assigned or delegated.
Requirements for the position
Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics, English Language, TESOL or a related discipline from a reputable tertiary institution.
A Ph.D.in any of the above disciplines is a plus.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in ESL education or program administration.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Knowledge of current trends and best practices in ESL instruction and adult education.
Other requirements/abilities for the position:
Strong understanding of ESL teaching methodologies and best practices.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment.
Experience in faculty development and performance evaluation.
Familiarity with language learning technology and multimedia tools.
