Job Title: Duty Watch Officer

Job Summary (Role Purpose Statement)
The Duty Watch Officer monitors vessel movements and offshore operations within Nigeria’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) using advanced tracking software.
The officer ensures that all operations comply with local and international maritime regulations and coordinates with the Captain, Chief Officer, and Operations Manager to guarantee safe and efficient operations.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor vessel positions, movements, speed, and offshore operations in real-time using specialized marine tracking software from the office.
Ensure that all vessel operations are conducted not less than 5 nautical miles from the Nigerian EEZ border.
Ensure that vessels operate exclusively within Nigeria’s EEZ, in compliance with Nigerian Maritime laws and international standards.
Liaise with the Operations Manager to obtain all necessary clearances before vessels arrive at any port.
Coordinate with the Captain and Chief Officer to ensure clearance and documentation requirements are fulfilled in a timely manner.
Maintain regular communication with vessel officers to support real-time operational decisions.
Promptly report any deviations, operational anomalies, or safety concerns, particularly related to EEZ boundaries.
Keep detailed logs of vessel activities, including compliance with the 5NM clearance zone and adherence to EEZ boundaries.
Assist in planning and optimizing vessel movements for operational efficiency and safety within the EEZ.
Report software or tracking issues and collaborate with technical teams for resolution.
Contribute to emergency response efforts if necessary.
Promote continuous improvement in safety and operational efficiency within Nigeria's EEZ.
Any other function that may be assigned by the vessel operations manager.
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Marine Operations, Nautical Science, Geography, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).
1 - 3 years experience in similar role.
Experience in vessel operations, particularly in Nigeria’s EEZ or similar offshore environments.
Familiarity with marine tracking software (e.g., AIS, radar) and EEZ regulations.
Understanding of Nigerian maritime regulations and international codes such as SOLAS, STCW, and ISM.
Experience with port clearance procedures and documentation is an advantage.
Excellent communication skills, liaising effectively with senior officers, crew, and shore-based teams.
Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions in real-time.
Certifications in maritime safety, vessel operations, or emergency response are highly advantageous.
Skills & Competencies:
High attention to detail, particularly with EEZ boundary compliance.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Proficiency in vessel monitoring software and operational tools, and other computer packages such as Microsoft Office Suite.
Familiarity with port clearance procedures and liaising with relevant authorities.
Effective multitasking and time management skills in a fast-paced operational environment.
Strong teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior officers, crew, and shore-based teams.
Working Conditions:
Office-based, with a requirement to monitor offshore operations onsite and remotely.
Shift work, including day and night shifts.
Regular communication with offshore personnel, including captains and chief officers.
