The Nigeria Chief Correspondent is a part of the Reuters News Accelerator Program.
Reuters is seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Correspondent to lead our coverage of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, largest economy, and top oil producer. Based in Lagos or Abuja, you will be responsible for producing a compelling multimedia file aimed at investors, professionals, and our worldwide media audience.
About the Role
As our Nigeria Chief Correspondent, you will:
Lead by example, consistently delivering exclusive news, compelling human-interest stories, and in-depth features.
Collaborate closely with colleagues across Africa and globally, ensuring groundbreaking and insightful coverage on diverse topics, including:
Nigeria’s economy, business and politics
The future of the oil sector
Foreign investment opportunities
Its thriving cultural scene including film and music
Assume managerial responsibilities within the bureau, including:
Deputising for the Bureau Chief when needed
Mentoring and training team members
About You
To be our Nigeria Chief Correspondent, you will likely have:
Minimum of eight years of journalistic experience in a fast-paced environment.
Proven ability to generate compelling ideas and write with authority across a broad range of topics.
Ability to deliver news swiftly, ensuring Reuters clients receive information first.
Proven track record of producing scoops and in-depth, revelatory features.
Strong collaboration skills, working with visuals colleagues and stringers to create original and engaging multimedia content.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively as part of a team.
Willingness to travel at short notice.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Proven success in breaking news, writing under tight deadlines, and delivering insightful features on complex and challenging topics.
Excellent news judgment, with the ability to prioritize coverage and generate ideas that resonate with a diverse audience.
Deep understanding of current issues in Nigeria and the region, with experience working in hostile environments and/or emerging markets. Knowledge of energy markets is a plus.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Some experience managing a news team.
Solid understanding of multimedia news planning; experience with visuals is desirable.
Fluent English; additional languages are a plus.
Readiness to work nights and weekends when needed.
