The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing laboratory tests in haematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.
The MLS will perform complex laboratory tests and procedures, analysing and interpreting laboratory results, maintaining quality control, maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, and record and report test results accurately and in a timely manner and contributing to the development and implementation of new laboratory methods and procedures. MLS will collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide accurate and timely laboratory results to support patient.
Key Responsibilities
Perform routine laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other bodily fluids to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.
Conduct tests in haematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology, including but not limited to: complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry tests, urinalysis, coagulation studies, and culture and sensitivity tests.
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, and incubators.
Prepare specimens for examination, including centrifuging, separating, and staining.
Maintain accurate records of test results and report any discrepancies or abnormalities.
Monitor quality control procedures and participate in the development and implementation of new laboratory procedures.
Follow laboratory safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper disposal of hazardous materials.
Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities to stay current with advances in laboratory technology and techniques.
Provide technical guidance to laboratory assistants and other medical personnel.
Adhere to laboratory accreditation standards, including but not limited to: ISO 15189, CLIA, and CAP.
Perform daily QC and review.
Daily Incident and nonconformities reporting.

Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science or Associate of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (AMLSCN).
Current practicing license as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures in haematology, clinical chemistry, and microbiology.
Understanding of laboratory safety procedures and protocols.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Good understanding of the Microsoft (MS) office application such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
Ability to operate office equipment, including computers, printers, laminating machine and telephones.
Required experience:
5 years and above working in a clinical laboratory.
Sound knowledge of relevant statutory legislation.
Specialty in Clinical Chemistry and Hematology is an added advantage.
