Job Title: Head of Legal

Responsibilities
Legal Strategy and Policy Development: Lead and implement the company’s legal strategy to support business objectives. Develop a comprehensive policy framework across all stakeholders, actively contributing to effective quality, process management, and relations.
Legal Advisory Support: Provide comprehensive and up-to-date legal advice to the GMD and the business in a wide range of areas, including contract law, corporate governance, compliance, and risk management.
Compliance Management: Monitor and ensure that the business complies with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Implement compliance strategies and guidelines where necessary.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Identify legal risks and potential legal issues within the business's operations. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate these risks and prevent legal disputes.
Litigation Management: Oversee and manage all litigation and legal disputes involving the company, ensuring that all legal actions are handled efficiently and cost-effectively.
External Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, industry associations, and legal professionals. Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to advance the company’s interests.
Corporate Governance and Secretarial Duties: Oversee the company’s corporate governance framework, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. Serve as the company secretary, maintaining corporate records and creating meeting minutes throughout board and committee meetings.
Problem Solving: Escalate issues requiring management attention/decision to ensure swift resolution of key legal issues by facilitating prompt decisions from the management team. Uphold the accuracy of all communications and correspondence with clients and stakeholders.
Team Leadership and Development: Lead and effectively manage the legal team, fostering a culture of professional development and continuous improvement, while managing departmental budget and resources effectively.
Competencies
Minimum of 10 years of work experience as a Lawyer.
Understanding of contract & legal drafting and negotiation.
Good advocacy strategy and planning skills.
Experience in dispute resolution (mediation, arbitration & litigation).
Advanced skills in research or investigations of facts and cases.
Ability to deal with complex problems and apply judgment and independent reasoning in situations where applicable precedence and laws may not exist.
Demonstrated drafting skills for corporate compliance and legal documentation.
Advanced practical experience in negotiations and drafting various types of company transactions.
In-depth knowledge of Nigerian legal regulatory frameworks and legal trends relevant to the industry.
