Lead Counsel, Property Law at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC)

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited is a dynamic global energy company with businesses and operations across the entire spectrum of the energy value chain. It is a state oil company in Nigeria. Formerly a fully-owned government company, it was transformed from into a limited liability company in July 2022.[1] NNPC Limited is the only entity licensed to operate in the country's petroleum industry. It partners with foreign oil companies to exploit Nigeria's fossil fuel resources.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Lead Counsel, Property Law

Location: Nigeria
Department: Legal

Objectives

• Lead in the perfection of titles, transfer of identified NNPC properties, and acquisition of properties.

Key Responsibilities

• Review legal documentation related to property investments and ensure its effectively drafted and interpreted.
• Provide professional assistance on all potential areas of exposure in property dealings including but not limited to regulatory, legal and contractual.
• Prepare and gather all reference evidence for external counsel use during litigation.
• Liaise with internal clients, external counsel of customers and vendors to identify objectives and negotiate agreements.
• Vetting of documents such as Agreement for Sale, Leave & License Agreement, Lease Agreement, Development Agreements, Deed of Conveyance, Tenancy Agreement, Deed of Gift, Will and Codicil, Documents related to Mortgage, Power of Attorney, Affidavit and other documents pertaining to litigation.
• Mitigate the Company’s risk by identifying, flagging up and advising on all potential areas of exposure to the Company in property dealings including but not limited to regulatory, legal and contractual exposure.
• Ensure effective monitoring of Property and Land matters as well as review financing and legal agreements.
• Ensure all property related matters are appropriately documented and filed in a structured, self-explanatory filing system and assist in any future corporation due diligence activity.
• Oversee and advise in respect of routine as well as high level and complex conveyancing and other property related work to ensure that the Company’s objectives are met and to best secure its property interests.
• Provide timely and regular reports on the activities of the Unit to the Manager Corporate Law.
• Provide regular, formal and informal feedback on identified gaps of direct reports’ performance and recommend appropriate solutions.

Educational Qualification

• A University Degree in Law; Barrister at Law (BL) qualification is a must
• Professional qualification and membership of relevant professional body is required e.g. NBA

Experience:

• Minimum of 9 years relevant post qualification experience.
• Experience in the oil and gas industry will be an added advantage.
