The University of Benin was established in 1970 as an Institute of Technology and it was accorded the status of full-fledged University by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July, 1971. It became a Federal University on 1st April, 1975. The University, since its establishment, has grown and is recognized to be among the highest ranking Universities in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
The Governing Council of the University of Benin in accordance with the provisions of the University Miscellaneous Provision (Now 2007 Act No. 1) 1993 as amended, is inviting applications from suitably qualified and distinguished Professors with cognate experience in University teaching, research and administration to fill the position below which will become vacant on the 2nd of December, 2024:

The Office and Responsibilities
The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University and Chairman of Senate, Congregation, Member of College/ Schools/Faculties/Institutes and any other Authorities of the University. He/she shall be the embodiment and symbol of the Vision and Mission of the University.
The Candidate
The Candidate shall be:
Competent at all times to advise the Governing Council on any matter affecting the policy, finance and administration of the University;
Responsible to Senate for the administration of academic programmes and students discipline in consonance with extant rules and regulations of the University; and
Generally responsible to the Council for maintaining good governance through proper enforcement of the University Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations.
Qualities and Qualifications
The Candidate for the post of Vice Chancellor shall be:
A distinguished scholar with proven outstanding academic leadership and administrative records.
A Professor of not less than eight (8) years status, who must have served as Head of Department, and Director, Dean, Provost or Deputy Vice Chancellor in a recognized University.
Must possess high moral standard, integrity, accountability and transparency.
Must be a proficient scholar with ICT skills relevant to contemporary times, attracting research grant, relates effectively and productively with government, alumni, staff and students' unions, public organizations, and non-governmental organizations. He/she must exhibit entrepreneurial drive, as well as foster collaborations and linkages.
Possess excellent physical and mental health (Certificate of medical fitness obtained from an approved Government Hospital must be attached).
Provide a document of not more than five hundred (500) words of his/her vision and mission for the University.
Tenure of Office and Terms of Appointment:
The Vice Chancellor shall hold office for a single term of five (5) years and shall not be older than 65 years of age on the 2nd of December, 2024, when the position is scheduled to be occupied. The remuneration and other conditions of service are as applicable to the post of Vice Chancellor in Nigerian Federal Universities and as may be determined from time to time by the Federal Government and the Governing Council.
