Overall Purpose of the Role
The position within the scope of DRC’s Protection projects, we plan, implement and follow-up on General activities, facilitate access to services through the referral system, sexual and gender-based violence prevention, protection monitoring and awareness-raising.
S/he will ensure the quality of the planning, implementation and follow up on all aspects of sector activities being implemented by DRC.
Develop and maintain good relations with the persons of concern, relevant stakeholders, and other humanitarian actors, to support adequate implementation and coordination of DRC’s protection activities.
The Protection Officer will be responsible for the supervision of the protection activities and team on his/her areas of responsibility.
Job Responsibilities
Programmme Quality and Implementation:
Ensure the development and quality implementation of all protection activities at field level in accordance with the agreed work plan (under the supervision of the protection manager) and the international standards.
Ensure the management/recruitment of the field protection casual workers (team and work management)
Develop/ prepare activity and protection reports (weekly, monthly, ad hoc)
Conducting needs and programmatic assessments in targeted locations as agreed upon with the manager
Identify, document, refer and or intervene on protection cases identified in within protection activities.
Liaise with humanitarian actors to lobby for services for beneficiaries through bilateral or multi-lateral engagement.
Ensure all protection cases are documented in appropriate forms – referrals, individual case forms, captured on Kobo and protection dashboard. Ensure all hard copies are stored securely and in appropriate filing systems as per DRC standards in coordination with PIM Specialist.
Ensure vulnerable persons, persons with disability, women, girls, UAMs and other vulnerable children are included in programming
Follow up on all protection-related complaints and conduct protection concern verification and referrals where appropriate.
Engage with communities directly and create awareness on protection mainstreaming, protection principles, human rights, child protection, SGBV, CFM, gender and age diversity inclusion throughout the project period.
Carry out protection risks assessments, protection monitoring activities as advised by line manager and coordinator.
Document and analyze FGDs, community meetings, KII and HH surveys conducted into a report for sharing with managers and coordinator for review.
Identify protection trends and bring this to the attention of the line manager for action planning
Carry out advocacy and sensitization activities at the field level
Represent DRC protection in all partner discussions at the field level
Carry out any delegated activities as assigned by DRC management at the field level including supervision of field bases.
Manage DRC protection assets assigned to the field of operation.
Liaise with security officers in DRC to always keep up to date on security situation of the field base.
Support protection coordinator, manager with itinerary planning for field visits including donor visits.
Provide detailed updates of activities within your designated field site
Supply Chain / Finance:
Support the monitoring of financial commitments and expenditures against budgets and provide timely feedback on budget follow-up.
Plan and coordinate proactively logistics and movements of staff from and to different operational areas
Initiate procurements and ensure their execution as requested by the Protection Manager
Support with the distributions, plans and coordination with logistics in a timely manner
Support Protection Team leader and Manager on the administrative tasks related to requests to logistics/procurement
Ensure compliance with guidelines on HR, admin, finance and logistics
The responsibilities listed in the JD are not exhaustive and may be readjusted according to operational needs but will remain in line with the overall purpose of the role.
Experience and Technical Competencies
Essential:
Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience in humanitarian organisation and at least 2 years’ experience with protection sector in Nigeria.
Strong understanding of protection issues including general protection, child protection and gender-based violence.
Excellent analytical and reporting skills.
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Knowledge of global protection guidelines
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Strong sense of personal integrity and understanding of confidentiality and ethics
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange, Windows operating systems etc.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and prioritize the safety and dignity of beneficiaries at all times.
Capacity to work under pressure and willingness to work and live in a complex context.
Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Law, Psychology, Social work, Social Sciences, Counselling, Education, Human Rights, Development Studies or relevant equivalent disciplines.
Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency in local spoken languages.
