COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale is an Italian humanitarian non-governmental organization founded in Milan in 1965. COOPI aims to help the world’s poorest to improve their access to healthcare, food, and financial security, and to overcome their special vulnerability to wars, civil conflicts and natural disasters. For 50 years of long-term support and constant presence in the field, COOPI has been engaged in breaking the cycle of poverty and responding to specific emergencies in numerous sectors, including Food Security, Humanitarian Aid, Health, Socio-Economical Services, Water and Sanitation, Disaster Risk Reduction, Human Rights, Education and Training, Migrations and Sustainable Energy.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Driver - Coordination

Location: Abuja Metropolis and its environment - Abuja (FCT) 
Employment Type: Full-time

Main Duties / Responsibilities
Under the general supervision and guidance of the Logistics Officer in Abuja or another designated staff, the Driver will be responsible for the following key duties:

  • The Driver is responsible for the provision of safe driving support and transportation of COOPI staff in Abuja and perform logistical duties as assigned.
  • He/she will report to the Logistics Officer / Abuja.

The safety and security of the persons being transported:

  • This is the first and paramount duty of the driver and overrides all other duties.
  • The driver must be sure of his choice of routes at all times and must not expose himself, his passengers, cargo and vehicle to situations which may result in damage and loss of life.
  • When driving, he strongly respects any traffic rules. He adapts his speed depending on the conditions of the road.

Terrain:

  • The driver must not select routes which are unduly arduous or dangerous when a safer alternate is available. He must not attempt to negotiate difficult road surfaces if these may result in damage to the vehicle or harm to its occupants.

Equipment:

  • The driver is responsible for equipment in his designated vehicle. He shall not use equipment in a manner which will endanger himself, the vehicle occupants, the cargo or indeed the equipment itself.

Speed Limits:

  • The driver must respect speed limits and avoid over speeding. Speed limit should be observed according to the traffic rules.

The correct loading of cargo:

  • The driver is responsible for loading and offloading of the vehicle.

The state of the vehicle and correct maintenance:

  • The driver must carry out daily and weekly vehicle checks. The driver must plan periodical service and maintenance as per the vehicle maintenance manual and accordingly inform his supervisor in a timely manner.

Updating the Vehicle Logbook:

  • The driver will update the vehicle trip and Fuel logbooks meticulously and have them signed appropriately.

The cleanliness of the vehicle:

  • The driver will ensure that the vehicle is kept clean at all times.

In case of accident:

  • The driver will immediately report any occurrence, however small, to his supervisor or designated staff.

Documentation:

  • The driver will always carry his driver’s license and copies of all relevant vehicle registration, insurance documents on every trip.
  • Moreover, the driver will carry documents pertaining to cargo such as delivery notes, Transit papers, Customs documents and Way bills and Vehicle Maintenance logbook / Fuel Trip Logbook at all times.

Authorization:

  • The driver is NOT authorized to sanction use of a vehicle. The driver will limit himself to executing missions on the direct request of the logistics officer, Country Admin or Head of Mission. A driver is NOT permitted to use a COOPI vehicle for uses other than official COOPI business sanctioned by the above person.

Passengers and cargo:

  • Passengers and cargo ferried in COOPI vehicles are authorized by the logistics officer, Country Admin and Head of Mission. Drivers are not authorized to ferry passengers or cargo except when this is authorized by duly appointed and authorized COOPO officers (Above).

Fuel:

  • Refueling and fuel loads are the responsibility of the driver. The driver is responsible for the correct fueling of the vehicle and will be held accountable for damages that arise from incorrect fueling procedures.
  • Drivers will be responsible for every liter of fuel they sign for and will be expected to utilize fuel responsibly.
  • Wastages, spills, or consumption of fuel through negligence (such as leaving the vehicle running idle for hours) will be debited to the driver.

Logistic support:

  • Provide support to logistics / admin department to facilitate delivery and collection of goods and correspondences, delivery and collection of official documents as appropriate, shopping for COOPI office and guesthouse etc.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by expat staffs or line manager.

Code of Conduct and associated policies:

  • Treat beneficiaries with dignity and apply COOPI’s Code of Ethics and Conduct, the UN Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in the field, including sensitizing Field Monitors and vendors/agents on such principles.
  • Promote the zero-tolerance policy regarding corruption and ensure adherence to COOPI Code of Conduct and Anti-Fraud policy.

Profile of the Candidate (Education, Training, Experience, Competences, Skills)
Minimum Requirements:
Education:

  • University Degree / Diploma in Mechanics.
  • At least 4 years working experience with INGO, NGO as a Driver.
  • Experience in technical vehicle maintenance will be an added advantage

Experience:

  • At least 4 years working with an INGO in a similar position.
  • Well-versed with driving in Abuja city and environs.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information.
  • Experience in vehicle maintenance / mechanics.

Competencies:

  • Good communication and negotiation skills with the ability to persuade, influence and adapts quickly to different situations;
  • Excellent oral, and writing skills.
  • Well organized and detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team with other departments and units

Essential:

  • Be professional, motivated, flexible, and culturally sensitive
  • Be excellent in communication skills and proficient in updating the vehicle fuel consumption, logbook and maintenance record.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office programming (Access, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
  • Excellent communication, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work in a team, and establish effective working relationships with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work under tight travel schedules and simultaneously manage multiple tasks in an autonomous manner.
  • Previous work experience with INGOs and UN Organization is desirable.
  • Time conscious.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the local language.
  • Previous experience in a similar position
  • This ToR shall be inclusive of any other task specifically those assigned by the Logistics Coordinator.
