The MRC Unit, The Gambia is undertaking a rotavirus vaccine impact and effectiveness study in children less than 5 years old residing in Upper River and Central River Regions Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems (HDSS). The proposal aims to assess the impact of a rotavirus vaccine introduction on incidence of moderate to severe diarrhoea (MSD). etiology and adverse clinical consequences.

Job Title: Junior Database Developer
Location: The Gambia

Job Responsibilities
- The post-holder will work closely with a small team of Senior Developers.
- In liaison with members of the team, s/he will be responsible for the analysis, design and development of database systems required by studies in the Unit.
- S/he will develop custom databases and utility toolkits for electronic data capture, data integration and data export.
- The-post holder will be responsible for study related database maintenance as well as legacy and archive database management.
- S/he will also be responsible for troubleshooting, updating and modifying existing database systems.
Essential Requirements
- University Degree in Computer Science or considerable relevant experience.
- Experience of programming and database system analysis and design.
- Experience of database design and data normalization.
- Familiar with different RDBMS such as MS Access, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL etc.
- Knowledge of writing stored procedures, triggers and database functions.
- Knowledge of client-server application design and development.
- Data access using DAO, ADO, ADO.NET, ODBC.
Desirable
- Experience of using VBA, VB.NET, ASP.NET, C# and .NET framework.
- An ability to troubleshoot and resolve database application related problems.
- Experience of working as a team leader at least for a small group.
- Knowledge/experience of agile and waterfall methodology for design and development.
- Experience/knowledge of design and development of mobile application for data collection.
- Knowledge of EAV data model and applications such as Open Clinica.
- Experience/Knowledge of distributed database application design.
- Experience/knowledge of using SharePoint/
- Some knowledge of installing and resolving issues of open source database applications.
- Some knowledge of Java.
Remuneration and Condition of Service
The appointment is to 31st March 2016 in the first instance and is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.
Salary will be in Grade 4 - 22 points.
