We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Tax Manager
The position will report to the BU Tax Manager, West Africa and will have a dotted reporting line to the Finance Manager for the Business.
The position will encompass regular contact with all finance staff, other functional heads and other functional staff within the Business, as well as the Africa Zone Tax Department. This position will involve some travel.
Operational tax issues at Business Unit level (local tax compliance, local tax planning and local tax in-country issues) are the responsibility of the BU Finance Director through the BU Tax Manager. This responsibility is delegated to the Tax Manager.
The role will entail:
Taking overall responsibility for all tax and tax compliance matters (including Income Tax, VAT, Excise Duty, PAYE, customs duties).
Direct responsibility for all Tax initiatives and projects within the Business
Motivating and managing all tax planning projects within the Business
Providing general tax consulting and advice to all business units, central functions and executive staff within the business.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The key accountabilities and delegated responsibilities of the position will be the following:
Determining and accounting for the Business’ tax liabilities and advising on tax provisioning;
Preparing (in conjunction with external advisers if appropriate), monthly and year-end tax budgets, a year-end income tax return and monthly tax liability forecasts and liaising with external auditors and with the Revenue Authorities on these (where applicable);
Ensuring that provisional tax payments are correctly calculated and paid;
Ensuring that all of the Business’ tax compliance obligations are fully met in a timely and efficient manner and that the calculation of all tax liabilities is managed and tax payments are made in accordance with legislation and prescribed deadlines;
Reviewing the monthly Value Added Tax Returns and excise returns prior to signature by the Finance Director/Manager and submission thereof to the Revenue Service;
Responding to queries received from the Revenue Service in respect of the Business’ tax affairs;
Actively managing tax audits to ensure that the Africa Zone Tax department is informed of such audits, brought in and utilised at an appropriate point in accordance with the Group policy and procedures;
Ensuring that regular operational tax reviews are conducted across the Business and involving the Africa Zone Tax team or external tax consultants as appropriate;
Considering the reports produced in respect of these operational reviews, and ensuring that the relevant corrective measures are implemented by the Business;
Attending to day-to-day internal queries which arise regarding all tax matters;
Considering and advising on the tax consequences, including transfer pricing consequences of various transactions (both with related and non-related parties) entered into by the Business;
Ensuring that Transfer Pricing defence files are in place and updated on an annual basis;
Monitoring any changes in the tax laws applicable to the Business and communicating and ensuring that these changes are implemented timeously by the Business;
Promoting and implementing the standardisation, automation and improvement of tax systems, as appropriate, and in the context of Zone and Group initiatives.
Planning and presenting internal tax training, e.g. training of the Business’ financial accountants, finance trainees and all relevant staff on Value Added Tax and excise duties etc.;
Providing tax input on lobbying initiatives that involve tax issues;
Taking responsibility for tax aspects of lobbying the Government/Local treasury on tax matters, whilst ensuring that the Finance Manager, Finance Director and the Africa Zone Tax Team are aware of this and actively provides input and guidance;
Acting as the key tax interface for the Finance Director and the Business on all tax matters and providing tax leadership, guidance and support;
Assisting the Business with developing appropriate tax staffing structures and positioning and coaching appropriate resources as applicable;
Implementing the approved tax strategy for the Business, whilst ensuring this is aligned with the Group’s overall tax strategy;
Co-ordinating the Business’ tax advisors to ensure that the most efficient level of service is provided whilst managing associated costs;
Pro-actively managing key tax value, risks and issues across the Business by dedicating sufficient time and energy to resolve such issues in a cost effective way;
Developing and executing strategies to ensure tax efficiency (including cash tax) across the Business;
Ensuring that the Business’ tax agreements/arrangements follow Group Tax policies and guidelines by liaising with the Africa Zone Tax department on these issues as well as on tax reputational matters;
Conducting quarterly tax operating committee meetings to discuss tax issues (i.e. the Finance Director to chair the meeting and the West Africa BU tax manager to attend these meetings).
Providing monthly tax reports to the Finance Director and the Africa Zone Tax department through the West Africa BU Tax Manager.
Working with the Africa Zone Tax department on the implementation of appropriate structures, agreements and tax matters that may impact on the Africa Zone or Group (e.g. all cross- border transactions with related parties)

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Finance / Accounting.
Minimum of five (5) years’ taxation experience, most of which should have been post qualification
Professional Qualifications in Accounting / Tax etc. will be an added advantage
Detailed knowledge of the Nigeria tax system
Ability to interact with Senior Executives
Ability to use Excel and other standard packages to a high standard
Other desirable Experience includes;
Experience gained in commerce or industry
Indirect tax exposure and understanding
Exposure to and/or experience in working in an international tax environment
