Job Position: Assistant Lab Technologist
Location: Enugu
Department: Lab Technology
Job Purpose
This job is responsible for providing technical assistance to staff and teaching assistants concerning experimental preparations and procedures.
Also, ensures compliance with health and safety standards of laboratory operations. In the absence of the Lab Technologist, he/she shall act.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares adequate quantity and quality of chemicals for experiments in a timely manner.
Prepares, issues and replaces laboratory equipment.
Installs, maintains, and issues student drawers.
Responds to technical questions, questions related to stock solutions, and use of equipment to staff and teaching assistants.
Maintains supplies and equipment inventories; orders supplies and equipment for laboratory; keeps stockroom organized.
Maintains teaching equipment and instruments to ensure accuracy and efficient performance.
Serves as safety officer for teaching laboratory; stays in lab to oversee safety during scheduled teaching time.
Plans support of laboratory experiments, ensuring adherence to protocols and safety regulations; assists in troubleshooting and correcting experimental errors.
Develops quality standards and programs; maintains quality of stockroom, safety, and environmental regulations, and other applicable requirements.
Maintains student breakage card records and submits list of charges and refunds each semester.
The post holder may be required to undertake such other duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post as directed by the Head of Department.
Person Specification
Qualifications:
Candidate must possess five (5) O'Level Credits including English Language and Mathematics
A B.Sc./HND from any reputable institution in relevant areas
Continued Professional development
NYSC discharge certificate/certificate of exemption is mandatory
Experience/Knowledge:
Candidate must hold at least three (3) years of teaching, research and administrative experience in a recognised University.
Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.
Knowledge of laboratory and experimental protocols and procedures.
Knowledge of teaching laboratory materials receiving and storage procedures.
Knowledge of laboratory operations and/or procedures.
Knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and/or environmental health standards.
Skills:
Be of proven managerial skill, able to utilise available human and material resources efficiently and effectively, to achieve set University goals and objectives.
Must be assertive, friendly, cooperative, flexible, tactful, dependable and logical – work in a collaborative manner with multiple offices.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyse and solve problems
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
Ability to provide technical guidance and training to end-users.
Ability to investigate and analyse information and draw conclusions.
Ability to utilise, calibrate, configure and/or troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
Excellent motivational and team-building skills.
