The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an independent medical aid organization based in Dakar, Senegal. ALIMA has three principal areas of expertise: providing medical care in humanitarian crises, supporting the development of national medical organizations, and conducting operational research to bring medical innovation to the field.
Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated over 1,500,000 patients in 34 medical projects in some of the most challenging humanitarian contexts in the world. ALIMA’s team has grown from seven co-founders to 1,500 staff, its budget from 250,000 euros to 24 million in 2015, its network of medical partners from two to five, and its research activities from pilot phases to conducting the first large-scale clinical trial of anti-Ebola treatment in Guinea.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Assistant Medical Coordinator
Location: Maiduguri
Main Purpose
- Assist and support the Medical Coordinator (medco) in the implementation of the overall medical content, activity and resources in the missions, by insuring the execution on different tasks delegated to him/her by the medco and in giving ad-hoc assistance in other specific activities, in order to facilitate the proper medical management of the projects and the medical follow-up of the staff of the mission.
Mission and Mainly Activities
The assistant is going to have in delegation of the Medco the following responsibilities:
- Collect the medical data of the projects (epidemiological data, statistics, project data), and elaborate regular reporting to the medical coordinator, in order to have updated and reliable information about the day-to-day activities of the projects.
- Follow-up of the global management of the referral system from the projects (especially Muna) in terms of supervision of the references in the hospitals and follow the related expenses of this activity.
- Follow-up patients referred by ALIMA field teams to the capital, supervising the organization of their transport, setting their further referral to reference facilities previously identified, doing follow-up on the treatment they receive and their evolution, and carrying out the administrative tasks associated, in order to keep special attention to most the complicated or sensitive cases
- Carry out medical/administrative tasks (inventory and management of the medical operational library, archiving of data and medical reports, etc.)
- Participate in medical emergency assessments (in and outside Maiduguri) under the responsibility of the coordination (HOM, Medco)
- Be in first line in responding to the medical needs of the national staff according to the Alima system put in place (annexed to this pdp)
- Monitor together with the Administration Coordinator the medical expenses associated with the personnel’s health care.
Further, the suitable candidate will support the Medical Coordinator as required on the following tasks:
- Support projects’ development by answering medical questions from the field, participating in briefings and debriefings of medical staff and replacing temporarily a member of the field team when necessary, in order to keep a smooth functioning of the projects.
- Participates in meetings (as assistant) in case of absence of medco (not decisional).
- Assist the MedCo in the stakeholder mapping (organigram of MoH, etc.)
- In the absence of a Mission pharmacy manager, organize and manage the central pharmacy, manage the medical stock, update the emergency boxes, prepare and dispatch medical orders requested from the field, and participates in drawing up international orders and organizing their reception, in order to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness during the whole supply process.
- Support the HR department and the Medco in doing the “triage” of the applications of the medical staff to ALIMA.
On the other hand, the suitable candidate will:
- Participate actively in reflections and discussions on the evolution of ALIMA programs in the mission, contributing with his/her background and experience to the improvement of overall performance, adapting it to the changing reality and context
Requirements
- Education: MBBS with Licence
- Experience: 3 years post graduate experience is essential. Experience in Nutrition, or experience with International Medical NGOs will be added advantage
- Language: English language essential
- Skills: Excellent knowledge of Nigerian Health system especially Borno State health system and circuits. Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Internet) required.
- Competence & Qualities: Results-oriented, Team-worker, Flexible, Committed, Ability to work under stress
