Phd, MBA Holders Apply as Truck Drivers at Dangote Group

Posted on Mon 05th Nov, 2012 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (28 comments)

The Chairman and Chief Executive Director of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote has made a shocking disclosure that  PhD and MBA Holders were among  over 13,000  applicants who applied for the recent Graduate Executive Truck Driver in his company.

Dangote disclosed this Thursday evening during a mentorship chat with World Bank Youth Forum (WBYF) Coordinator, Mr. Rotimi Olawale with the support of the World Bank Country Director, Ms Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly.

Speaking to the surprised youthful audience, the business mogul said that the company only needed 100 drivers but was surprised to receive over 13000 graduate applicants and amongst them were about six Phd, 65 MBA, 649 Masters and over 8, 460 Bachelor degree holders.

He said what surprised him most was not the sheer number of the applicants but the quality and calibre of those that applied who equally graduated from reputable higher institutions.

"All these things are verifiable, and they all graduated from reputable institutions which is satisfactory; and our plan is to eventually make them self dependent", he said.

"Despite the fact that the drivers get trip allowances on each trip along with their salaries, the arrangement is that they will own the trucks at no interests or repayments after they must have reached 300, 000 kilometres, which is about 140 trips from Lagos to Kano and a hard working driver can complete in two years, while lazy ones can take maximum of four years", he explained.

Speaking further, Dangote stated that his company is already one of the largest conglomerates in Africa, and disclosed that the group's five-year target is to reach a net-worth of $75 billion capitalisation and among the top 100 companies in Africa.

He assured that the group, which have diversified into various trading and manufacturing subsidiaries can achieve the set target with just three of them including Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugars/Salt, and Dangote Flours.

The business icon used the opportunity to advise the youths to be focused, forthright and that determination to succeed with integrity is the key to a sustainable wealth.

Mr. Dangote u advertised for 2000 now u say 100. Moreover, u say these applicant are equally qualified with verifiable results why not employ them into other sectors of ur conglomerate rather than advertise vacancies in those sectors. Eg you r advertising vacancies for dangote cement... You r not sincere!

This did not come to me as a surprise. What vex me is only knowing of the vacancies today. Since I graduated for the past 13 years, it has being my dream to be an employee of Dangote Plc. Another opportunity missed.

@Vince you are most likely an ungrateful fool. You failed to realise that Dangote is only giving hand to your woeful Nigerian government, it is not mandatory for his company to employ in other areas which was not advertised. He has even tried to let the Nigerian corrupt and failed government to know the situation on ground.

What a shame! PhD holders applying for Drivers positions? Could that be true? I still find it unbelievable. But those PhD holders did not do well also. It would have been better to go and be teaching in Secondary School than becoming a driver with all efforts to be a holder of Doctoral Degree. Ha ba, not even now that we have many Private Unis. You just made this Aboki to mess you up.

Dangote has B.Sc in Business Administration after he was almost successful in his business. He started his humble begining as a truck pusher and he began to rise gradually. Selling all dis kind of food stuffs, from there to food contractor and supplier and then built up all dis food processing company with other today.
Ur education u have is just a basic platform for enlightment, not that i must be employ after formal education. Experience nowadays is far better than qualifications. Couple ur HND or B.sc with hand work and definitely u will have ur end means. This dangote man even started with experience before incorporating formal education and it realy help him at the end in his business. Venture into any business you think peole can not do without them daily.
Thanks.

THINK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY. EACH ONE OF US ARE POTENTIAL DANGOTE IF AND ONLY IF WE START DOING SOMETHING DESPITE HOW SMALL IT IS. KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH EDUCATION IS MEANT TO LEAD US TO POSITIVE PRODUCTIVE ACTIONS. ALH ALIKO DANGOTE IS JUST A PATRIOTIC NIGERIAN WHO IS MAKING HIS CONTRIBUTION TO MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR NIGERIANS, I PRAY GOD BLESS MORE NIGERIANS WITH WISDOM AS DANGOTE.

Alh. Aliko Dangote is a good man that has the interest of Nigerians in heart. I wish our corrupt and greedy politicians will borrow a leaf from him. Instead of dumping our collective money into thier private swiss bank account, they should build thier individual companies here which will in turn give job to teaming Nigerian citizens

my point of anger is that: why has Dangote chosen to mock the calibre of people that applied to his company? To me, i dont believe in his business acumen or whatever. Dangote and his associates are all 419 and looters of our economy. They are not real investors, all they do is to make so much noise on papers and embezzle thee nation's wealth in the name of so-called investment. They are all empty vessels and hardened criminals. Nigerians should better be wise because these people-dangote and the likes- are capitalist. The all got their money through illegality and now the whole country is celebrating an ill gotten wealth. Nigerians should wake up and stop doing follow follow. Dangote and his allies are the most corrupt men in Nigeria. What annoys me is coming out with his half eduation status to mock ph.d M.SC and MBA applicants who secretly applied to him to earn a living. Not that he has given them the job but he has come openly to echoe the pathetic situation of the applicants. To me, dagote is very crude and primitve. He was just futurnate to be where he is today. Dangote is not intelligent or too spectacular in what he is doing. Any body even a 13year person who gets the money dangote illigally got can even do better than him. Enough of all these hypocrisy.

Fellow Nigerians, Rather than blame Dangote for the woes of these people, let's get past whatever mistake of negative publicity that came out of this. The fact is that even if these people applied for the low-level jobs, our dirty stuff should not be washed in public. However, if ALL those criminals who stylishly stole the country's wealth create jobs for others so they too can put food on the table for their families, the country will surely be a better place to live. It is time to encourage local investment that will benefit others and discourage foreign deposits for unborn generations.

Fellow nigerians, never let us blame Mr Dangote 4 employed 100 nigerian graduates, I strongly believe in my hearth if Mr ALIKO Dangote advertise 100 nigerian graduates as well more than 10,000 will also apply.

Nigeria has failed every unemployed graduate it has. I do not want to go into the details of Dangote and how they 'said' he started as a truck pusher, but those are just stories of made men, trying to give hope to poor people by lying that they started poor too. Dangote is the nephew of one of africa's richest men (Late)Alhaji Dantata and it is on record that he got a loan of 500,000 Naira(when naira was naira) to start a trade, so dont believe the story of starting poor.

My problem is this. There is a term called overqualification for a certain vacancy. if you want to help Phd and MBA holders, if you really want to help them, why take them as drivers? the job satisfaction is not there for someone with advanced degrees. How will they feel when they see their mates in reunions and they introduce themselves as truck drivers. If you want to empower Nigerians, then do it the right way. You want to build a 75$ Billion Dollar Factory, You are into Cement, Flour, Sugar....etc. I am 100% certain that the workload in these factories are more than the personnel, then why not hire Quality Assesment Offiers, Logistics Officers, Microbiologists, Chemists, Pharmacists, Lab scientists, accountants, IT technicians.....all these jobs and more will be required in your company. This your hire purchase idea of taking a Phd holder for a driver is appaulling. Hire Unskilled/Semi-skilled workers for Unskilled jobs.
Nigeria, we hail thee.
