Police Recruitment: CP Disqualifies 2nd Class Upper Degree Holder for Speaking Bad English

Posted on Fri 26th Aug, 2011 - hotnigerianjobs.com --- (34 comments)

Career News -Commissioner of Police in-charge of Lagos State command, Yakubu Alkali, has disqualified an English Language graduate with second class upper division grade in the ongoing Force recruitment exercise for allegedly speaking bad English and failing to spell words correctly.

The CP who was excited when he saw the good grade of the young man, was reportedly disappointed with the applicant’s response to questions in unpardonably bad English.
The CP was said to have been more disappointed following the English Language graduate’s inability to spell the word, ‘encounter’.

Alkali, was said to have vowed to disqualify anyone who did not live up to expectation in the area of conduct and defence of their results during the recruitment.

Alkali confirmed that the second class upper division English Language graduate was unable to express himself. He said he would not recruit such a person who could not defend his result into the Force. The CP who was not happy with the way and manner those who did not merit their grades were honoured by the tertiary institutions they attended, vowed to personally screen entrants into the Force.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Samuel Jinadu, confirmed that some suspects had been arrested for falsification of results. He, however, did not give the figure, saying that it was still being compiled.

I think the so called employers of labour who always demand for university graduates with second class upper division need to read this aticle. I dont know why Nigerians so much believe in ordinary paper (certificate) and not in competency and know how? Every foolish man who knows his way can graduate with second class upper division without knowing anything. Anyway, those of us that work very hard befor getting our certificate, God will reward us and graduate us from the labour market.

i think the CP like most other employers of labour have their priorities mixed up! English is not our first language and should never be used as a judge for intelligence! there are different fields in school and different careers, if i happen to have a 2.1 in Arabic studies nko? am i suppose to be a guru in English too? What about people that studies French? wait! what about Engineers? they need numerical knowledge to do their jobs, not and never English. NATO commander could barely speak English in one of his interviews i watched, is the so-called CP better than him in executing his security duties?! I know friends that speak Very good English (out of excessive oyibo movies), but can barely fill a form! we should be very careful of finger pointing. The guy may have been plain nervous, i have never attended any interview that the interviewer makes any attempt to make you comfortable (except of course if its an International Organisation). They rather take joy in making u unstable and very uncomfortable thereby making people make common mistakes.

God bless you Mr CP.i thinks others should follow suit. Nigeria employers are so in love with the certificates not minding individual output, forgetting that Nigeria varsity lecturers are interested in the highest bidder.

@ princess blue why are you talking off point? Isn't composure part of what is expected of a good university graduate? Abeg, the mumu either has a fake result or simply plain half-baked. STOP DEFENDING INCOMPETENCE.

This is a shameless product of an Ivory tower,Go and learn how to sell pepper at Mile 12. Your parents paid for special center for your WASSCE/NECO e.t.c, Employed their connection to secure admission through the Vice Chancellor and your NYSC programme at Abuja,PH or Lagos.....See the shame you have brought to their family. It is people like you that denied seroius potential students admission into the Universities.Thank God your parent did not have the connection to influence the Police.I wonder how many interviews you have Boko Haram them with your Rockets. All employers of labour should follow the path of the OGA POLICE.God bless Nigeria.......

I thank God that the secret of people is now leaking to the world, its just a pity that the concerned people will not read all these article, let Nigerian continue there discrimination and the secret will continue to surface.let them continue to render HND USELESS,2.2 irrelevant, and the nigeria system keep collapsing. To the concerned pple in realm of HND and lower grade in the Universities, rest assure that ur possession cannot be posessed by anybody irrespective of their disparity.

It is pathetic that Nigeria universities have not tackle the issue of fake graduates headlong and there is no doubt about it that such will continue to occur until lasting solution is provided.Kudos to Alkali for such a giant stride to ensuring that fake graduates are not recruited into the force.

Employers always demand for B.sc holders, for the fact that someone graduated with 2nd class upper does not make him the best candidate. Employers should give equal chance to all graduates irrespective of their school. Many universities are live on the old glory.

This is a laboratory result of the argument or fallacy that a first class or 2.1 is conclusively always better than any other class of degree especially 2.2. Employers and Management Experts (are they really experts?)very unfortunately naively believes that first class or 2.1 is the ultimate and can always deliver better than 2.2 or any other degree, not knowing that they can be a first class material who can end up in 2.2 or a 2.1 material who may end up with 3rd class. Results are the outcome of human assessment and the imperfection in human judgement or his other actions can always manifest either as a product of unintention or intentionally. E.g. In my final year, a core course that I had A in last semester of 300L, another Lecturer taking us in my final year failed me in the 2 semesters because he said I was winning awards from my research work and could not give him money. He ended up marring my result but he can not take away what God has given. He can only do that in paper assessment. As if the case of the recent NNPC Aptitude test result and GMD's comment was not enough, this is a clear laboratory result of the argument. Please the police authority should kindly let NNPC, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Ltd and other Employers who celebrity paper qualification in our environment that is so corrupt rather than celebrating people and what they can offer. Did Hon. Salisu Buhari not have a fake certificate from Toronto and emerged as the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives in 1999? It is very unfortunate that we don't learn from history. Imagine the guy's 2.1 is even in English not Chemical or Space Engineering where he or his supporters can make excuses. Even a graduate in Ground-Nut Sales should be able to spell the word 'encounter'. Naija, we hail thee!

kudus to the cp that fish out fake graduate, let me disclosed to u that all graduate in nigeria should be given the same opportunity when it comes to offer like this, those graduates with 3rd class are better of those with 2.1 or 2.2 even do better of 1st class when it comes to express themselves outside........ie 3rd class graduate are better than 2.1,2.2 and 1st class

it goes to show that second class upper is no more what it used to be. there is general rot in the education sector. that explains the reason for post jamb and other duplicates; waec/neco etc

No matter how we look at this issue, it is simply an embarassment that a graduate cannot spell "encounter"...much more an English Language graduate. However, it is also a reflection of the rot and degradation of our educational system in this country. May God help us!

don't be in a hurry to conclude on what the CP said. though is a pity a graduate cannot spell. lets be honest with ourselves, the recruitment process in Nigeria is not by merit but by who you know and connection especially when it comes to govt job. the CP has slot and do you think the CP would prefer to employ a first-class graduate and deny his/her relative employment. Some employer would like to paint your effort bad either first-class,2.1,2.2 so they can help their God fathers/relatives. Am not against any grade but if not for private sectors, am saying this with all boldness that we graduate won't get a govt job.Govt job is meant for the top ranking officers in the force and the politicians. Have you visited any police station? even the officers with rank of CSP, SP and ASP some cannot speak well yet they were promoted to that rank. Please lets not be in a hurry to say what we don't know much about. one more question for you guys, if you are in a position to employ 5 graduates and from your relatives you have 4 cv's of candidates you want to help, what will you do if that is your last chance to help?

A Tree cannot & will never make a Forest. If CP Alkali Prevented less qualified Candidates into the Police on his Table alone,do you Know how many saboteurs will allow such on their Desks? Anyway, kudos to him for having the courage to lay good example. As for me, i downloaded the recruitment Form, but jettison the idea of following it up because i dont have godfather like those Lilly-Livered individual who will make it.

Well I reserve my comment on this issue ,what is the CP trying to paint? graduate incompetence! when 85% of the Police does not even have common sense meet them at road block and imagine the type of stupid question they will ask you just because they want to exploit you. because Police employ the highest number of nonentities, therefore young man know the best place to take his certificate to for employment.

This is very sad.A university graduate of English Language who can not spell the word "encounter" even if he was under pressure it does not matter. It shows the guy does not deserve the grade and why is CP covering the instituton the guy claimed he graduated from by not mentioning the exact university. It's very shameful. On the hand the guy might have presented a fake result and this should be treated severely if possible jail him for this unlawful act.

Dis is not astonishing.obviously, nigerians(employers of labour&students)'s mentality towards, kind of school attended paper&grades as major requisite for job is backwarding.in Nigeria, they will tell u dat university's graduate is greater&better dan polytechnic's graduate(unscrupulous discrimination).if u ask dem why is it so?they wil tell u bcos they attended university&bin taught by proff.madness&pple are so naive over ds.irrespectiveof d school u attend, anybody can be intellectual.Naive believe, dat Attending university, aving 2.1,2.2,etc, is d major parameter to competency, intelligence,is fallacious To recruit know how pple,d criteria of only BSC,(not HND),2.1,2.2etc sud be jettisioned&dat is y we are far from efficacy in our various economic sectors unlike oda countries.in china,d realistic recruitment policy is to interview for d job, graduate from various tertiary institutions regardless,ur kind of school,ur grade.at last they pick only dose dat perform credibly& worthily on d job pratice test¬ base on paper qualification, university, grades.l believe dat very soon ds fanatic believe, paper qualification,BSC better off HND requisite for applying&getting job will be oblivous, extinct.my gagantua kudos to NIGERIA POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION for fathoming the fact dat both BSC&HND are equal to d same rank,ASP,unlike oda fanatic afformentioned above such as FRSC,NDLEA,CUSTOM,IMMIGRATION,etc.NPSC,is d most proactive employers in iliciting criteria for recruitment, odas are latent at theirs&dat is y efficiency wud continue to elude dem.by ds trend by NPSC,in the near future time, more sensible&proactive pple will constitute NIGERIA POLICE

Lets all calm down here. Are we not in the same Nigeria when after completing the Private universities VC's conference like 3 years back and one of the VCs was asked why they produce so much graduates with 1st class and 2:1 grades as compared with the government ran universities? And guess what his answer is? He said "how do we justify the school fees being paid by each students? by failing them?" Meaning once you can afford a private university you are rest assured of @least a 2:1. I was even told that you resit for exams you fail in Covenant University. Does any government university offer this kind of generosity? So much for 1st Class and 2:1 grades.
