INSO is a global charity dedicated exclusively to issues of humanitarian safety and to the operation of NGO Safety Offices (NSO) in volatile or insecure contexts. INSO NIGERIA aims to support safety awareness and safety management capabilities amongst NGOs within Nigeria.
We are now seeking an experienced individual to join our team as candidates who will based out of the INSO office located in Maiduguri:
Job Title: Assistant Safety Advisor
Location: Maiduguri, Borno
Starting Date: Immediately
Duration of the Contract: 1 year renewable
Reports directly to: The Safety Advisor (head of sub-office)
Purpose of Position
- The ASA will deputize the Deputy Safety Advisors (DSA) for most of his tasks:
- Assist in the collection of security information
- Supporting the delivering of NGO request services
- To follow, implement, and help develop INSO security policies and procedures
- Ensure that the information provided by NGOs and other actors is kept confidential
Key Responsibilities
The list of responsibilities is not exhaustive: other tasks may be requested to adapt operational needs.
Assist in the collection of security information:
- Receive and review the incidents report from the Field Monitors (FM) on a daily basis.
- Review the verification standards used by the FM and select those incidents which are not yet verified.
- Contact FM’s to further verify security information as per need.
- Develop and maintain personal and professional contacts in the region.
- Work to verify non-confirmed incidents through other sources (UNDSS, NGO’s, media, twitter).
- Verify information with multiple sources and employ proper questioning to ensure its accuracy, as per INSO policy.
- Assist the SA in striving to develop and maintain at least 1 contact within every NGO present in the region (to be developed).
- Follow up and collect detailed information on incidents as requested by the RSA.
- Regularly communicate with Safety Advisor (SA) on FM performance.
Ensure that the information provided by NGOs and other actors is kept confidential:
- Request permission from the Safety Advisor before sharing any security information collected by INSO.
- Ensure that the names of NGOs are omitted from any INSO report.
- Refrain from using confidential information (or other INSO resources) for personal, monetary, or professional gain
To follow, implement, and help develop INSO security policies and procedures:
- Follow and enforce INSO security policies.
- Review relevant INSO security documents upon request and assist the RSA in ensuring the office is thoroughly aware of actions to take due to the plan.
- Immediately advise the SA of any issues that may affect the security or safety of INSO staff.
- Ensure that emails and key electronic files are backed up periodically.
Adhere to INSO safety policies and procedures:
- Fully comply with INSO policy directives;
- Observe and maintain the confidentiality and safety of all NGO information;
- Observe and maintain the confidentiality and safety of any documentation/procedures as outlined by Director
Adopts professional conduct and positive attitude:
- Other tasks may be requested and should be executed diligently
- Manage your time in the office effectively.
- Work to ensure a positive working atmosphere by enhancing a cordial working relationship.
Posting Details
- This position is based in Maiduguri but involves potential trips in the whole North Eastern region
- The position requires the holder to be able to undertake tasks at short notice with due regard to the safety environment
- The position requires the holder to be able to work effectively and efficiently without supervision.
- The holder must display a high degree of ethic and responsibility for his/her own actions.
- This position requires a degree of flexibility with respect to working hours
Mandatory Requirements
Applicants MUST have all these:
- Bachelor in IT, Journalism, Communication, Political Sciences, History, or any other equivalent diploma
- At least 5 years of military, police and/or NGO safety work experience, at a mid-management level
- Excellent English writing skills with ability to research and present complex issues in a clear and concise manner as well as a fluent conversational level of at least one of the following languages: Hausa, Kanuri or other local languages relevant to North Easter Nigeria.
- A good understanding of NGO approaches to safety is essential
- A Proven experience and knowledge of the North-Eastern Region
- A proven ability to develop and maintain working relationships with key safety interlocutors
- Excellent Computer skills and knowledge of Windows and Office programs
- Nigerian nationality
Preferred Characteristics (Applicants SHOULD have 1 or more of these):
- 2 or more years of work experience with NGOs
- Deep understanding of the Nigerian safety environment and its historical context
- Deep understanding of humanitarian principles
- Experience in high quality report production
- Demonstrated capacity to work with minimal supervision and maintain a high level of engagement
- Staff management experience
